Dwarf Hamster

Phodopus sungorus, P. campbelli and P. roborovskii

Care level

Beginner

Lifespan

1.5 to 3 years

Adult size

20 to 50 g

Dwarf hamsters, including Winter White, Campbell's and the tiny Roborovski, are fast, charming and fascinating to watch as they zoom through tunnels at night. They are smaller and quicker than Syrians, which makes them harder to handle but wonderful to observe. Some can live in same sex groups, though this needs care and can break down.

Housing & setup

Give the same generous floor space as a Syrian, a minimum of about 5000 square centimetres of continuous floor and ideally more, with deep 20 to 30 cm bedding for burrowing. Add a solid silent wheel of at least 16 to 20 cm, a sand bath, hides and plenty of chews. Because they are small escape artists, choose a tank or a bin cage with very narrow bar spacing and a secure lid.

Diet & feeding

Feed a quality dwarf hamster seed and grain mix as the base, with small amounts of fresh vegetables and occasional protein such as a mealworm. Fresh water must always be available. Critically, Campbell's, Chinese and hybrid dwarf hamsters are highly prone to diabetes, so avoid all sugary foods, fruit and sweet treats and choose a low sugar mix. Feed small daily amounts and let them forage by scattering food in the bedding.

Temperature, light & environment

Keep them at about 18 to 24 degrees Celsius, away from direct sun, heat sources and draughts, and provide genuine daytime darkness since they are nocturnal to crepuscular. Maintain moderate humidity and good ventilation. Avoid sudden temperature swings, which stress these small bodies quickly.

Company & handling

Social needs vary by species: Roborovski, Winter White and Campbell's can sometimes live in same sex pairs or groups if introduced very young and given ample space, but fighting is common and separation is often needed. Chinese hamsters and many individuals do best solitary. All are quick and delicate, so handle low over a soft surface and build trust patiently rather than grabbing.

Enrichment & exercise

Deep bedding, a large wheel and multiple tunnels suit their busy, burrowing nature. Provide a sand bath, chew toys, cork bark, scatter feeding and safe clutter to explore. If kept in a group, offer multiple hides, wheels and food stations to reduce competition.

Common health problems

Diabetes mellitus

Signs: Excessive drinking and urination, weight loss despite eating, lethargy, sticky or sweet smelling urine

Prevention: Strict low sugar diet with no fruit or sweet treats, especially for Campbell's, Chinese and hybrids

Fight wounds and abscesses

Signs: Bite wounds, swellings, hair loss, one hamster hiding or being chased, blood in bedding

Prevention: Cautious same sex only pairing from a young age, ample space and separating at the first sign of conflict

Wet tail and diarrhoea

Signs: Watery droppings, wet soiled rear, lethargy, hunched posture, poor appetite

Prevention: Keep stress low, housing clean and diet stable, and seek urgent care as dehydration is rapid

Skin tumours and mites

Signs: Lumps, hair loss, scabs, flaky itchy skin or excessive scratching

Prevention: Clean housing, quarantine new bedding sources, regular health checks and prompt vet review of lumps

In Macau

Keep dwarf hamsters in an air conditioned room during Macau's hot, humid summers and out of direct sunlight to prevent overheating. Because diabetes is common in several dwarf types, read pellet and treat labels for sugar and choose an exotics vet who can test blood glucose if needed.

The Roborovski dwarf hamster is the smallest pet hamster in the world, often under 5 cm long, yet it can run the human equivalent of several kilometres on its wheel each night.
