Golden Retriever health guide

About this breed

Golden Retrievers are gentle family dogs that thrive on exercise and company. Their main health themes are joints, skin and, in later life, a higher-than-average cancer risk, which makes senior screening especially valuable.

Living in Macau's climate

The dense water-repellent coat plus Macau humidity is the perfect recipe for hot spots, so dry your Golden thoroughly after rain or swimming. In summer, exercise early or late and watch closely for heavy panting on humid days.

Common health conditions

Hip and elbow dysplasia

Signs: Stiffness after rest, bunny-hopping, lameness that worsens with growth spurts.

Prevention: Feed large-breed puppy food, keep growth lean, avoid forced exercise before 12 months, and screen the joints early.

Cancer (lymphoma, hemangiosarcoma)

Signs: New lumps, swollen glands, pale gums, unexplained weight loss or a swollen belly.

Prevention: Cannot be fully prevented, but twice-yearly senior checks with blood work and ultrasound catch many cases at a treatable stage.

Hot spots and skin allergies

Signs: Sudden moist, painful, fast-spreading sores; licking and chewing at the skin.

Prevention: Dry the coat fully after every wetting, use year-round parasite prevention, and clip and treat hot spots the day they appear.

Ear infections

Signs: Head shaking, odour and discharge under the heavy ear flaps.

Prevention: Dry and clean the ears after swimming or rain with a vet-recommended cleaner.

Daily care tips

  • Dry the coat and ears thoroughly every time your Golden gets wet.
  • Keep weight lean for life; it is proven to delay arthritis by years.
  • Check the whole body for new lumps monthly from age 6.
  • Give at least an hour of exercise daily, split into cooler hours in summer.
