French Bulldog health guide
Also known as: Frenchie, Bouledogue Francais
About this breed
French Bulldogs are affectionate, low-exercise companions whose popularity in Macau has soared. They are also the breed we most often treat for heat and breathing trouble, so prevention matters more than for almost any other dog.
Living in Macau's climate
Frenchies are the highest-risk breed for heatstroke in Macau's humid summer; restrict walks to early morning or evening, carry water, and go straight home at the first sign of loud panting. Air conditioning is a medical need for this breed from May to October, not a luxury.
Common health conditions
Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS)
Signs: Noisy breathing, snoring, gagging, blue-tinged gums or collapse after mild exertion.
Prevention: Keep weight strictly lean, walk in the cool hours on a harness, and have the airway graded; corrective surgery helps many dogs breathe and live better.
Intervertebral disc disease and hemivertebrae
Signs: Sudden back pain, wobbly hind legs, dragging paws or reluctance to jump.
Prevention: Prevent jumping from furniture, use ramps, keep weight down, and treat any sudden weakness as an emergency.
Skin fold and allergic dermatitis
Signs: Itching, face rubbing, red paws and smelly moist folds.
Prevention: Clean and dry the folds daily, use year-round parasite prevention, and see us early; allergies are managed, not cured.
Ear infections
Signs: Head shaking, ear odour and dark discharge in the narrow canals.
Prevention: Dry the ears after baths and rain, and clean with a vet-recommended solution when wax builds.
Daily care tips
- Treat summer heat as this breed's number one killer; walk early, short and shaded.
- Keep your Frenchie lean; every extra kilo makes breathing measurably worse.
- Use ramps for sofas and beds to protect the spine.
- Wipe and dry facial folds daily in the humid months.
