Pomeranian health guide

Also known as: Pom, Squirrel Dog, Zwergspitz

Breed guidePomeranian

About this breed

Pomeranians pack big personalities into tiny frames and are a fixture of Macau's small-flat households. Their windpipe, knees, coat and teeth are the four areas that need the most attention.

Living in Macau's climate

The thick double coat was built for northern winters, so provide air conditioning and shaded walks through the humid summer. Never shave to the skin; clipping too close can trigger permanent coat loss, so ask for a proper de-shedding groom instead.

Common health conditions

Tracheal collapse

Signs: A dry goose-honk cough, worse with excitement, collar pressure or heat.

Prevention: Always walk on a harness, keep weight lean, and avoid smoky or incense-heavy rooms; medication controls most cases.

Patellar luxation

Signs: Skipping steps or carrying a back leg for a few strides.

Prevention: Keep your Pom lean, add carpet or mats to slippery floors, and have the knees graded yearly.

Alopecia X (coat loss)

Signs: Symmetrical hair thinning over the body with darkened skin, usually without itching.

Prevention: Avoid close shaving, rule out hormonal disease with blood tests, and discuss regrowth options with us.

Dental disease

Signs: Bad breath, tartar and loose teeth from a young age.

Prevention: Daily brushing plus professional cleaning as advised; tiny jaws crowd teeth and trap plaque.

Daily care tips

  • Use a harness for every walk; a collar tug can trigger the windpipe cough.
  • Brush the double coat several times a week and never shave it to the skin.
  • Start tooth brushing in puppyhood so it becomes routine.
  • Cover slippery tiles with mats where your Pom runs and turns.
