老年寵物篩檢:及早發現問題
寵物比人類老化得更快。老年寵物的年度篩檢可以在症狀出現之前發現疾病。
Pets age much faster than humans — by age 7, most dogs and cats are in their senior years (equivalent to a human in their 50s). Many age-related diseases develop silently, with no visible symptoms until advanced stages. Senior pet screening detects problems early, when treatment is most effective. - Pets are considered seniors at age 7 (large breeds age faster)
- Early detection of disease improves outcomes and extends quality life
- Screening includes blood tests, urinalysis, blood pressure, and X-rays
- Kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid disease, and cancer are common in seniors
- Many senior diseases have no symptoms in early stages
- Annual or bi-annual exams are recommended for senior pets
What is Senior Screening?
Senior screening is a comprehensive health assessment designed to detect age-related diseases before symptoms appear. It includes: complete physical examination (looking for lumps, dental disease, joint problems, heart changes), blood tests (CBC, chemistry panel, thyroid test), urinalysis (kidney function, urinary tract health, diabetes screening), blood pressure measurement (hypertension damages kidneys, eyes, and heart), and chest X-rays or abdominal ultrasound if indicated.
Common Senior Diseases
Kidney disease: very common in cats; detected early through SDMA test and urinalysis. Diabetes mellitus: causes increased thirst, urination, and weight loss. Hyperthyroidism (cats): causes weight loss despite increased appetite, hyperactivity, and heart disease. Hypothyroidism (dogs): causes weight gain, lethargy, and skin problems. Cancer: early detection through lump checks and imaging. Heart disease: detected through X-rays, ECG, and echocardiogram. Arthritis: managed with supplements, medication, and weight control. Cognitive dysfunction: 'doggie dementia' with disorientation and behavior changes.
How Often to Screen
Dogs and cats under 7: annual wellness exam with basic blood work. Seniors (7+): comprehensive screening every 6-12 months depending on breed, health status, and existing conditions. Large and giant breeds may need senior screening starting at age 5-6. Pets with chronic conditions (diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease) need more frequent monitoring. Early detection of new problems in senior pets can add years of quality life.
Cost vs Value
Senior screening costs $200-500 depending on the extent of testing. This may seem expensive, but early detection saves money long-term. Treating advanced kidney disease with hospitalization and fluid therapy costs thousands. Managing early-stage kidney disease with diet and supplements costs a fraction of that. Early cancer detection allows for simpler, less expensive surgery. Diabetes caught early is easier and cheaper to manage than diabetic ketoacidosis requiring hospitalization. Screening is an investment in your pet's health.
