- Annual fecal testing is recommended for all pets
- Some pet parasites can infect humans (especially children)
- A fresh stool sample is needed for accurate testing
- Fecal testing should be part of every annual wellness exam
- Puppies and kittens need more frequent testing
What Fecal Testing Detects
Standard fecal flotation tests detect eggs of roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and some tapeworms. Specialized tests (Giardia antigen, PCR panels) detect protozoal parasites like Giardia and Coccidia. Some parasites shed eggs intermittently, so a negative test doesn't always mean no infection — your vet may recommend repeated testing.

Why Annual Testing Matters
Even pets on monthly preventives can pick up parasites. Some products don't cover all parasite types. Parasites can cause chronic, low-grade illness that's hard to detect without testing. In multi-pet households, one infected pet can spread parasites to others. And some pet parasites (like Toxocara roundworms) can cause serious disease in humans, especially children.
For Puppies and Kittens
Young animals need more frequent fecal testing — typically at each vaccination visit. Most puppies and kittens are born with or quickly acquire intestinal parasites from their mother. Multiple deworming treatments are needed to break the parasite lifecycle. Your vet will create a deworming schedule based on fecal test results.
