寵物自製與生食飲食:您需要知道的

The desire to feed fresh, whole-food diets to pets is understandable. However, homemade and raw diets carry significant risks if not properly formulated. Nutritional deficiencies, bacterial contamination, and bone hazards are common problems. RVC can help you make informed decisions about your pet's diet. Call +853 6677 6611.

  • Most homemade diets are nutritionally incomplete without professional formulation
  • Raw meat carries bacterial risks (Salmonella, E. coli, Campylobacter)
  • Raw bones can fracture teeth, cause choking, or perforate the intestines
  • Puppies and kittens are especially vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies
  • Board-certified veterinary nutritionists can formulate safe homemade diets
  • Commercial diets undergo rigorous testing and quality control

Risks of Homemade Diets

A 2013 study found that 95% of homemade diets for dogs were nutritionally inadequate. Common deficiencies: calcium, phosphorus, vitamin D, zinc, copper, and essential fatty acids. Excesses can also be dangerous — too much vitamin A causes bone problems, too much liver causes vitamin A toxicity. Imbalances in calcium and phosphorus cause bone deformities in growing animals. Without laboratory analysis, it's impossible to know if a homemade diet is balanced.

Raw Diet Concerns

Raw meat, bones, and eggs carry bacteria: Salmonella, E. coli, Campylobacter, and Listeria. These can make your pet sick and can be transmitted to humans in the household (especially children, elderly, and immunocompromised). Raw bones cause: tooth fractures, choking, esophageal obstruction, and intestinal perforation. Freezing does NOT kill bacteria — it only slows growth. Raw diets are banned in some veterinary hospitals due to contamination risk.

If You Choose Homemade

Work with a board-certified veterinary nutritionist (ACVN or ECVCN diplomate) to formulate the diet. They will specify exact ingredients, amounts, and supplements. Use a kitchen scale — measuring cups are inaccurate. Add a complete vitamin/mineral supplement formulated for homemade diets. Have the diet analyzed periodically. For puppies, kittens, pregnant animals, and pets with medical conditions, homemade diets are especially risky.

Safer Alternatives

If you want fresh food without the risks: 1) High-quality commercial diets with whole food ingredients. 2) Commercial fresh/frozen diets that are complete and balanced (AAFCO or FEDIAF compliant). 3) Lightly cooked homemade diets formulated by a veterinary nutritionist. 4) Top a balanced commercial diet with small amounts of cooked meat, vegetables, or eggs (less than 10% of total calories). These approaches provide freshness without the nutritional risks.
