澳門寵物龜護理指南

Turtles are one of the most popular exotic pets in Macau — from small red-eared sliders to larger species. While they may seem low-maintenance, turtles have very specific environmental requirements that must be met for them to thrive. With proper care, many pet turtles live 20-50+ years — making them a serious long-term commitment.

  • Turtles need both water and a dry basking area with UVB lighting
  • UVB lighting is essential — without it, turtles develop Metabolic Bone Disease (soft shells, deformities)
  • Water quality is critical — use a powerful filter and change water regularly
  • Turtles carry Salmonella — always wash hands after handling
  • Red-eared sliders can grow to 25-30cm — plan for adult size when setting up housing
  • Turtles need a varied diet — commercial pellets alone are insufficient

Housing Setup

Aquatic turtles need a tank with water depth at least 2x their shell length, plus a dry basking area above the water. Minimum tank size: 10 gallons per inch of shell length (a 6-inch turtle needs 60+ gallons). The basking area needs a heat lamp (30-35°C) and UVB light. Water temperature: 24-28°C depending on species. Use a powerful canister filter — turtles are messy eaters and produce a lot of waste.

UVB and Basking

UVB lighting is the single most important aspect of turtle care. Without UVB, turtles cannot synthesize Vitamin D3 or metabolize calcium, leading to Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD) — soft shells, deformed shells, and eventually death. Use a dedicated UVB bulb (10.0 or higher) that covers the basking area. Replace UVB bulbs every 6-12 months (output decreases over time). Provide 10-12 hours of light daily.

Feeding

A varied diet is essential. Commercial turtle pellets should be the base (30-40% of diet). Protein: earthworms, crickets, shrimp, small fish (30-40%). Vegetables: leafy greens (romaine, bok choy, water hyacinth), carrots, squash (20-30%). Avoid: bread, dairy, processed foods, and spinach in large amounts (oxalates block calcium absorption). Feed juveniles daily, adults every 2-3 days.

Common Health Problems

Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD): caused by insufficient UVB/calcium — soft or deformed shell. Shell rot: bacterial/fungal infection of the shell — appears as soft spots, discoloration, or foul smell. Respiratory infection: caused by cold water or dirty conditions — wheezing, nasal bubbles, floating unevenly. Parasites: internal parasites are common — regular fecal exams recommended.
