Vaccination is one of the most important things you can do for your dog's health. Vaccines have dramatically reduced the incidence of deadly diseases like distemper, parvovirus, and rabies. In Macau, where dogs may encounter strays and wildlife, maintaining an up-to-date vaccination schedule is essential for protecting your pet, your family, and the community.

Mga Pangunahing Punto

  • Core vaccines (DHPP + Rabies) are essential for ALL dogs regardless of lifestyle
  • Puppies need a series of vaccinations starting at 6-8 weeks, not just a single shot
  • The DHPP vaccine protects against Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus
  • Rabies vaccination is legally required in Macau and most jurisdictions
  • Non-core vaccines (Leptospirosis, Bordetella, Canine Influenza) are recommended based on lifestyle risk
  • Adult dogs need booster vaccinations — immunity does not last forever

Puppy Vaccination Schedule

Puppies receive maternal antibodies from their mother's milk, but these fade between 6-16 weeks. To protect during this vulnerable window, puppies need a series of vaccinations: DHPP at 6-8 weeks, 10-12 weeks, and 14-16 weeks. The rabies vaccine is given at 12-16 weeks. A booster DHPP at 1 year completes the initial series. Until the full series is complete, avoid dog parks, pet stores, and other areas where unvaccinated dogs may have been.

Adult Dog Boosters

After the 1-year booster, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends DHPP boosters every 3 years. Rabies boosters are typically annual or every 3 years depending on local regulations and the vaccine type used. Leptospirosis — important in Macau where rats are common — requires annual boosters. Bordetella (kennel cough) boosters are recommended every 6-12 months for social dogs.

Non-Core Vaccines for Macau

Beyond the core vaccines, several are recommended based on your dog's lifestyle in Macau: Leptospirosis (spread through rat urine, common in urban Macau), Bordetella (required by most groomers and boarding facilities), and Canine Influenza (for social dogs). Your vet can assess your dog's risk factors and recommend the appropriate non-core vaccines.

Vaccine Safety

Modern veterinary vaccines are very safe. Mild side effects — slight fever, reduced appetite, or soreness at the injection site — are normal and resolve within 24-48 hours. Serious reactions (allergic reactions, anaphylaxis) are extremely rare (less than 0.1%). If your dog has had a previous vaccine reaction, discuss spacing out vaccines or using pre-treatment with your vet. The risk of NOT vaccinating far exceeds the minimal vaccine risks.
