An annual wellness exam is the foundation of preventive pet healthcare. Just like humans need regular checkups, pets benefit from routine veterinary exams — even when they seem perfectly healthy. Many serious conditions develop silently, and early detection during a wellness exam can be life-saving.

Mga Pangunahing Punto

  • Pets age faster than humans — one year = 5-7 human years
  • Many diseases show no obvious signs until advanced
  • A wellness exam is more than just 'looks fine' — it's systematic
  • Blood work catches problems the physical exam can't
  • Dental assessment should be part of every exam
  • Twice-yearly exams are recommended for senior pets

What Happens During a Wellness Exam

Your vet performs a nose-to-tail physical exam: eyes, ears, mouth (dental check), lymph nodes, heart and lungs (auscultation), abdomen (palpation), skin and coat, joints and mobility, weight and body condition score, and neurological assessment. This systematic approach catches abnormalities you might miss at home.

Why Annual Blood Work Matters

Blood work (complete blood count and chemistry panel) reveals what the physical exam can't: early kidney disease, liver problems, diabetes, thyroid disease, anemia, infections, and more. These conditions often develop silently — by the time you notice symptoms, significant damage may have occurred. Annual blood work establishes baselines and catches changes early.

Age-Appropriate Screening

Puppies/kittens: vaccine series, deworming, growth monitoring, behavior guidance. Adults (1-7 years): annual exam, vaccines, blood work, dental assessment, parasite prevention. Seniors (7+ years): twice-yearly exams, comprehensive blood work, thyroid testing, blood pressure, urine analysis, and cancer screening. Senior pets age much faster and conditions develop more quickly.

Making the Most of Your Visit

Write down any questions or concerns before the visit. Bring a fresh stool sample. Note any changes in appetite, thirst, urination, behavior, or activity level. Mention any lumps, bumps, or unusual smells. Ask about weight, dental health, and parasite prevention. The wellness exam is your opportunity to discuss your pet's overall health — don't be shy!
