Signs to watch for
- Drooling and pawing at the mouth
- Black-stained gums or burns
- Vomiting or refusing food
What to do
Come in immediately, do not induce vomiting. Button batteries burn through the gullet within hours; chewed batteries leak alkali.
Macau note
Remote controls, toys and hearing aids are the usual sources. A swallowed button battery is a same-hour emergency.
