Ragdoll health guide
Also known as: Raggie
About this breed
Ragdolls are large, relaxed, blue-eyed cats famous for going floppy when held. The breed carries a well-known gene for heart muscle disease, making cardiac screening the cornerstone of Ragdoll preventive care, alongside coat and bladder health.
Living in Macau's climate
The semi-long coat mats faster in Macau humidity than owners expect, especially armpits and trousers; comb to the skin twice a week. In summer, provide cool tiled resting areas and watch heavy-coated cats for open-mouth breathing, which is never normal in cats.
Common health conditions
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)
Signs: Often silent; fast or laboured breathing at rest, sudden collapse or hind-leg paralysis.
Prevention: A DNA test exists for the Ragdoll HCM mutation; screen early, then monitor with heart checks and ultrasound as advised.
Urinary tract disease and bladder stones
Signs: Straining in the litter tray, frequent small urinations, blood in urine, or crying.
Prevention: Encourage water with fountains and wet food; a male cat that cannot pass urine is a life-threatening emergency.
Obesity
Signs: A large frame hides gradual gain; feel for ribs monthly.
Prevention: Measured meals and play sessions; big breeds still get fat, they just hide it better.
Hairballs and coat matting
Signs: Frequent retching of fur tubes, clumped fur along the spine and thighs.
Prevention: Comb to the skin twice weekly and increase during moults.
Daily care tips
- Ask about the Ragdoll HCM DNA test at the first visit.
- Run a water fountain and feed wet food daily for bladder health.
- Comb to the skin twice a week; surface brushing misses forming mats.
- Learn to count resting breaths; it is the best home heart monitor.
