Top 10 Pet Health Tips for Hong Kong & Macau Pet Owners

Keeping Your Pet Healthy in the Greater Bay Area

Living in Hong Kong or Macau with pets comes with unique challenges. The subtropical climate, dense urban environment, and seasonal weather patterns all affect your pet's wellbeing. Here are our top 10 tips from the veterinary team at Royal Veterinary Center to help your furry companion thrive.

1. Prevent Heatstroke Year-Round

Macau and Hong Kong's hot, humid climate puts pets at serious risk of heatstroke, especially from May to October. Never leave your pet in a parked car. Walk dogs early in the morning or after sunset, and always carry fresh water. Flat-faced breeds like French Bulldogs and Persian cats are especially vulnerable.

2. Stay on Top of Parasite Control

Fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes are active year-round in our subtropical climate. Monthly preventatives are essential — not optional. Heartworm, spread by mosquitoes, can be fatal. Ask your vet about combination products that protect against multiple parasites at once.

3. Know the Toxic Foods

  • Chocolate and caffeine — toxic to dogs and cats
  • Grapes and raisins — can cause kidney failure
  • Onions and garlic — damage red blood cells
  • Xylitol — found in sugar-free gum, extremely dangerous for dogs
  • Mooncakes and festive treats — high fat and sugar, common during Mid-Autumn Festival

4. Exercise Smart in Small Spaces

Many Macau and Hong Kong residents live in compact apartments. Use puzzle feeders, indoor games, and short but frequent walks to keep your pet physically and mentally stimulated. Cat trees and window perches are excellent for indoor cats.

5. Monitor Air Quality

Poor air quality days affect pets too, especially those with respiratory conditions. Keep pets indoors when the Air Quality Index is high and ensure good ventilation at home.

6-10: Additional Essentials

  • Watch for seasonal allergies — itching, sneezing, and skin irritation are common in spring
  • Water safety — not all dogs can swim; supervise near beaches and pools
  • Schedule regular checkups — annual wellness exams catch problems early
  • Prioritise dental hygiene — dental disease affects most pets by age three
  • Provide mental stimulation — rotate toys, teach tricks, and vary walking routes
