NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Aspirin)
Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen (Aleve) are extremely toxic to dogs and cats. Even small doses cause stomach ulcers, kidney failure, and neurological signs. Cats are especially sensitive — a single 200mg ibuprofen tablet can be fatal. Acetaminophen (Tylenol, paracetamol) is toxic to both species: causes liver failure and methemoglobinemia (inability of blood to carry oxygen) — cats are exquisitely sensitive, with fatal doses as low as 10mg/kg. Aspirin is sometimes used in veterinary medicine but must be dosed carefully.
Antidepressants and Anti-Anxiety Medications
SSRIs (Prozac/fluoxetine, Zoloft/sertraline, Lexapro/escitalopram) and SNRIs (Cymbalta/duloxetine, Effexor/venlafaxine) can cause serotonin syndrome in pets: agitation, tremors, seizures, hyperthermia, and death. Tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline) cause sedation, seizures, and heart rhythm abnormalities. Benzodiazepines (Xanax/alprazolam, Valium/diazepam, Klonopin/clonazepam) cause profound sedation, respiratory depression, and paradoxical agitation in some cats. Sleep aids (Ambien/zolpidem) cause ataxia and hyperactivity in cats.
ADHD Medications and Stimulants
Amphetamines (Adderall, Ritalin/methylphenidate, Concerta, Vyvanse) are extremely dangerous. These medications cause: hyperactivity, tremors, seizures, hyperthermia, high blood pressure, heart arrhythmias, and death. Extended-release formulations are particularly dangerous because they release medication over hours, causing prolonged toxicity. Even small amounts can be fatal — a single Adderall tablet can kill a small dog. Immediate veterinary care is essential.
Heart Medications and Other Dangers
Beta-blockers (metoprolol, atenolol) and calcium channel blockers (amlodipine, diltiazem) can cause fatal heart block and low blood pressure. ACE inhibitors cause low blood pressure and kidney issues. Diuretics cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Diabetes medications: metformin can cause low blood sugar and lactic acidosis. SGLT2 inhibitors (Jardiance, Farxiga) cause dangerous blood sugar drops. Cancer drugs (chemotherapy) are obviously toxic. All hormone medications (thyroid, estrogen, testosterone) can cause problems.
When to See a Vet Immediately
- Suspected ingestion of any human medication
- Pet found with chewed pill bottle or blister pack
- Sudden vomiting, lethargy, or neurological signs after medication was accessible
- Tremors, seizures, or abnormal behavior
- Difficulty breathing or collapse
- ANY concern about medication exposure — call immediately
