Exotic Pets Are Popular in Macau
Beyond cats and dogs, many Macau residents keep exotic pets including parrots, budgies, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, turtles, and reptiles. These animals make wonderful companions, but they have specialised care needs that differ significantly from traditional pets. At Royal Veterinary Center, our vets are trained to provide expert care for a wide range of exotic species.
Common Exotic Pets and Their Needs
- Birds (parrots, budgies, cockatiels) — require social interaction, mental stimulation, proper lighting with UV exposure, and a diet beyond just seeds including pellets, fruits, and vegetables
- Rabbits — need unlimited hay, daily leafy greens, spacious housing, and regular dental checks as their teeth grow continuously
- Hamsters and guinea pigs — require clean bedding, exercise opportunities, and species-appropriate diets; guinea pigs need vitamin C supplementation
- Reptiles (turtles, geckos) — need precise temperature and humidity control, UVB lighting, and carefully balanced diets
Finding an Exotic Vet in Macau
Not all veterinary clinics in Macau are equipped to treat exotic species. Royal Veterinary Center has vets with specific training in avian and exotic animal medicine. We recommend wellness checkups at least once a year for exotic pets, as they often hide signs of illness until the condition is advanced.
Common Health Issues
- Birds — respiratory infections, feather-plucking, psittacosis
- Rabbits — GI stasis, dental malocclusion, myxomatosis
- Reptiles — metabolic bone disease, respiratory infections, parasites
- Small mammals — wet tail (hamsters), scurvy (guinea pigs), dental problems
Legal Requirements
Macau has regulations on which exotic species can be kept as pets. Certain protected species under CITES are prohibited. Before purchasing an exotic pet, verify its legality with the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM). All imported animals must meet health certification requirements.
