Parasiticides Courants
Des comprimés anti-puces aux vermifuges, découvrez les différents types.
Parasiticides are medications that kill or repel parasites. Modern parasiticides are remarkably effective and safe, but the variety of products can be confusing. Understanding how they work helps you choose the best protection for your pet.
Points Clés
- Different parasiticides target different parasites
- Oral products are generally the most effective for fleas and ticks
- Many products now combine multiple protections in one dose
- Year-round prevention is recommended in Macau's climate
- Never use dog products on cats — some are toxic to cats
- Your vet can recommend the best product for your pet's needs
Types of Parasiticides
Isoxazolines (fluralaner, sarolaner, afoxolaner, lotilaner): oral medications that kill fleas and ticks for 1-3 months. Macrocyclic lactones (ivermectin, milbemycin, moxidectin): prevent heartworm and treat some intestinal parasites. Phenylpyrazoles (fipronil): topical flea and tick treatment. Imidacloprid: topical flea treatment. Praziquantel: treats tapeworms.
Combination Products
Many modern products combine multiple protections. For example: Simparica Trio protects against fleas, ticks, heartworm, roundworms, and hookworms in one monthly chew. NexGard Spectra covers fleas, ticks, heartworm, and intestinal worms. These combination products simplify your pet's parasite prevention routine.
Safety Considerations
Modern parasiticides have excellent safety profiles when used correctly. Always use the correct product for the correct species — permethrin-based products are toxic to cats. Follow weight-based dosing guidelines. Report any adverse reactions (vomiting, lethargy, tremors) to your vet immediately. Some breeds (Collies, related breeds) may have sensitivity to certain medications.
Choosing the Right Product
The best product depends on your pet's lifestyle, risk factors, and what parasites are most common in your area. Indoor cats may need different protection than outdoor dogs. Your vet can recommend the most appropriate product based on your pet's specific needs.
