Obésité des Animaux : Risques pour la Santé et Stratégies de Perte de Poids
Plus de la moitié des animaux sont en surpoids. L'obésité raccourcit la durée de vie et cause le diabète, l'arthrite et les maladies cardiaques.
Pet obesity is one of the most common preventable diseases in veterinary medicine. Over 50% of dogs and cats are overweight or obese. Excess weight causes diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, respiratory problems, liver disease, and certain cancers. Most importantly, obesity shortens lifespan by 2-3 years. The good news: weight loss is achievable with the right plan. RVC provides weight management programs. Call +853 6677 6611.

Health Risks of Obesity
Obesity is not just about appearance — it's a serious medical condition. Risks include: osteoarthritis and joint pain (excess weight wears out joints faster), diabetes mellitus (fat cells interfere with insulin function), heart disease and high blood pressure, respiratory difficulty and exercise intolerance, liver disease (hepatic lipidosis in cats, fatty liver syndrome), increased anesthesia risk, heat intolerance, skin fold infections, and increased cancer risk. Every extra pound matters.
Is My Pet Overweight?
Body condition scoring (BCS) is the standard assessment. At ideal weight: ribs are easily felt with slight fat covering, waist is visible from above, and abdomen is tucked up from the side. Overweight: ribs are difficult to feel, waist is barely visible or absent, and abdomen is rounded or sagging. Obese: ribs are buried under fat, waist is absent, and abdomen hangs down. Your vet can assign a BCS score (1-9 scale, ideal is 4-5).
Safe Weight Loss Plan
1) Calorie calculation: your vet determines your pet's ideal weight and daily calorie needs. 2) Prescription weight-loss diet: these diets are lower in calories but higher in protein and fiber to maintain muscle mass and promote satiety. Simply feeding less regular food causes nutrient deficiencies. 3) Measure food with a kitchen scale — don't guess. 4) Eliminate treats or switch to low-calorie vegetables (carrots, green beans). 5) Increase exercise gradually. 6) Monthly weigh-ins to track progress.
Exercise for Weight Loss
For dogs: start with 10-15 minutes of leash walking twice daily, gradually increasing to 30-60 minutes. Swimming is excellent low-impact exercise for dogs with arthritis. For cats: interactive play with wand toys, laser pointers, or motorized toys for 10-15 minutes twice daily. Food puzzles and treat balls encourage movement. Cat trees and climbing structures promote activity. Every bit of movement counts — be consistent, not intense.
