Hot spots (acute moist dermatitis) are red, oozing, painful patches of skin that seem to appear out of nowhere and spread rapidly. They're most common in warm, humid weather — like Macau's summers — and in thick-coated breeds like Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Labrador Retrievers.

What Are Hot Spots?
A hot spot starts when your dog scratches, licks, or chews an area of skin (often from an insect bite, allergy, or minor wound). The moisture from licking and the bacteria on the skin create a rapidly expanding area of infection. The result is a red, oozing, painful patch that's hot to the touch — hence the name. They can grow from a small spot to a large lesion in just 24 hours.
Immediate Home Care
If you spot a hot spot, gently clip the fur around the area to let air reach the wound. Clean it with a mild antiseptic (chlorhexidine solution). Keep your dog from licking it — an e-collar may be necessary. Do NOT apply ointments or bandages without vet guidance, as trapping moisture can make it worse. Then get to the vet as soon as possible.
Veterinary Treatment
Your vet will clip and clean the area thoroughly, removing all matted fur and debris. They'll prescribe antibiotics (oral or topical) to fight the infection, anti-inflammatory medication to reduce pain and swelling, and possibly a topical spray. An e-collar prevents further self-trauma. Most hot spots heal within 7-10 days with proper treatment.
Prevention
Preventing the underlying cause of itching is key. Keep up with flea prevention, manage allergies, dry your dog thoroughly after swimming or bathing, and groom regularly to prevent matting. In hot weather, check your dog daily for early signs of skin irritation.
