Your home should be the safest place for your pet, but everyday items we take for granted can pose serious risks. From electrical cords dangling from countertops to common houseplants that are toxic, Macau apartments contain hidden dangers for curious dogs and cats. This comprehensive pet-proofing checklist will help you identify and eliminate hazards before they cause harm. Source: Merck Veterinary Manual.

Mga Pangunahing Punto

  • Many common houseplants (lilies, dieffenbachia, sago palm) are toxic to pets — remove them from accessible areas
  • Electrical cords are a chewing hazard that can cause severe mouth burns, lung damage, or death
  • Small objects like coins, batteries, hair ties, and children's toys can cause intestinal blockages if swallowed
  • Human medications — especially ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and antidepressants — are common pet poisons
  • Open windows in high-rise Macau apartments pose a fall risk for cats — install secure screens
  • The kitchen is the most dangerous room — secure trash, keep food out of reach, and never leave the stove unattended

Living Room and Common Areas

Electrical cords: tape down or conceal all cords. Curious puppies and kittens love to chew on them, causing severe mouth burns and potentially fatal lung damage. Use cord protectors or bitter apple spray deterrents. Plants: remove toxic varieties — lilies are deadly to cats, sago palms cause liver failure in dogs, and dieffenbachia causes oral irritation. Small objects: coins, batteries, hair ties, buttons, and children's toys can cause life-threatening intestinal blockages if swallowed. Check under furniture and cushions regularly. Window safety: Macau high-rise apartments are dangerous for cats — install secure window screens or mesh to prevent falls. Keep cords for blinds and curtains out of reach to prevent strangulation.

Kitchen Hazards

The kitchen is the most dangerous room for pets. Secure trash in a cabinet with a childproof lock or use a lidded trash can — garbage is a buffet of dangers including spoiled food, chicken bones (which splinter and perforate intestines), and packaging. Never leave food on countertops unattended. Keep all human medications in high cabinets — ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and antidepressants are common pet poisons. Xylitol (artificial sweetener found in sugar-free gum, peanut butter, and baked goods) causes liver failure in dogs. Grapes, raisins, chocolate, onions, and garlic should all be stored in sealed containers.

Bedroom and Bathroom

Keep all medications, supplements, and vitamins in closed cabinets — never on nightstands or counters. Close toilet lids to prevent drowning risk (small pets can fall in and be unable to escape). Store cleaning products, laundry pods, and bleach in sealed containers on high shelves. Keep makeup, skincare products, and essential oils out of reach — many contain ingredients toxic to pets if ingested. Dental floss, razors, and cotton swabs are common foreign body ingestion risks. Check the bathroom before closing the door.

Balcony and Storage Areas

Macau apartments often have small balconies — ensure railings are close enough together that pets cannot squeeze through (cats can fit through gaps as small as 10cm). Do not store antifreeze, pesticides, or rodenticides where pets can access them — antifreeze tastes sweet to pets but causes fatal kidney failure even in tiny amounts. Keep fertilizers and plant food in sealed containers. Ensure your pet cannot access neighboring balconies. Never leave a pet unattended on a balcony in hot weather.
