Chinchillas are adorable, soft-furred rodents native to the Andes Mountains. They have unique care requirements that differ from other small pets. Their dense fur (60+ hairs per follicle) requires dust baths, and they are sensitive to heat. RVC provides exotic pet consultations for chinchillas. Call +853 6677 6611.

Mga Pangunahing Punto

  • Chinchillas need dust baths 2-3 times weekly — never water baths
  • Temperature must stay below 26°C — they are prone to heatstroke
  • High-fiber diet: unlimited timothy hay and chinchilla pellets
  • Dental problems are common due to continuously growing teeth
  • Fur slip: chinchillas can release patches of fur when handled roughly
  • Social animals that do best with a same-sex companion

Housing and Environment

Minimum cage size: 90cm x 60cm x 120cm tall — chinchillas love to jump and climb. Provide multiple levels, ledges, and a solid exercise wheel (minimum 38cm diameter, solid surface — no wire wheels). Wire cage floors cause foot injuries; use solid flooring or cover wire with fleece. Keep the cage in a cool, well-ventilated room away from direct sunlight. Ideal temperature: 18-21°C. Above 26°C is dangerous — chinchillas lack sweat glands and overheat easily.

Diet and Nutrition

Unlimited timothy hay is the foundation of the diet — it provides fiber for digestion and wears down teeth. Chinchilla pellets (alfalfa-based for adults) should be given in measured amounts to prevent obesity. Avoid seeds, nuts, dried fruit, and treats high in sugar/fat — chinchillas are prone to diabetes and liver disease. Fresh water must always be available. Treats should be limited to small amounts of rose hips, dried herbs, or plain shredded wheat.

Dust Baths and Grooming

Chinchillas take dust baths in fine volcanic ash or commercial chinchilla dust. Provide a shallow container with dust for 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times per week. Remove the dust bath after use to prevent it from becoming soiled. Never give water baths — wet fur mats, grows mold, and doesn't dry properly. Regular dust baths keep the fur healthy, oil-free, and soft. If fur becomes matted or urine-soaked, consult a vet — it may indicate an underlying health problem.

Common Health Issues

Heatstroke: panting, red ears, lethargy, collapse — emergency! Dental malocclusion: overgrown teeth causing drooling, weight loss, and eye discharge (due to tooth roots growing into the nasal cavity). Gastrointestinal stasis: decreased appetite, reduced fecal output, bloating — often caused by stress, dental pain, or low fiber. Fur ring: a ring of fur around the penis in males that can restrict urine flow. Respiratory infections: less common than in guinea pigs but can occur.
