How to check at home

Three quick hands-on checks, no equipment needed. Repeat them monthly to catch weight changes early.

  1. 1. Rib check

Run both hands along your pet's ribcage with light pressure. You should feel each rib under a thin layer of fat, like the back of your hand. Ribs that are hard to find mean excess fat; sharp, prominent ribs suggest your pet is underweight.

  2. 2. Waist check

Look down at your pet from directly above. Behind the ribs you should see a clear inward curve, like an hourglass. A straight or bulging outline suggests excess weight.

  3. 3. Profile check

Look at your pet from the side. The belly should tuck upward from the ribcage towards the hind legs. A sagging or hanging belly suggests excess weight.
